And so it begins...

In approximately four days from now, I will be arriving in Kassel, Germany, where I have been awarded a scholarship to study on the university's Translation and Interpretation four-week summer course. I await this, the first of many challenges over the coming year, not so much with trepidation as with excitement at the thought of being back in Germany again, doing something I love.

The next month will effectively decide the course of the rest of my life. For a while now I've been considering a career in translation, and these next few weeks will either confirm my enthusiasm or rule this out as an option. More than that, I'll be able to decide whether I can really genuinely see myself living in Germany in the future, as I have convinced myself in the past, especially since spending six weeks working in Hochheim last summer.

Realistically, though, I know it's ridiculous to rest so much on the very limited insight a four-week-long experience can provide. After this (and a cheeky holiday to Thailand), I have four months in Russia and six months in Spain to get through, which may change my perspective entirely. So for now, I guess, the best thing is to take each day as it comes, to grab this opportunity and enjoy every minute of it.
